Jerusalem sage is a shrub that produces delightful yellow flowers even in drought conditions and very poor soil. It is an excellent choice for arid climates and hard to plant problem sites. The shrub is evergreen in USDA zones 8-11, though it can be treated as a perennial in zones 7, 6 and, sometimes, zone 5. The growth will die back with the frost and grow back from the roots in the spring.

Andean sage is an equally rare herbaceous perennial flowering plant in horticulture. The plant is scandent, meaning that it climbs without the use of tendrils, with wiry white stems growing from its base. The leaves, stem and flower buds all exhibit a strong and distinct odor of blackcurrant. The flowers are 1 in long with deeply saturated dark purple color. It blooms during hot spells through summer and autumn and is a frequently grown ornamental on the French and Italian Rivieras, where it grows 3 ft high and wide.
