Moisten the Frangipani Seeds To hasten the germination process, the seeds need to be plumped up with moisture. The easiest way is to place the seeds between moistened tissue papers. Leave them for 24 hours in a warm environment. You will notice that the thicker part of the seeds will swell. The seeds will now be ready for sowing. 2. Prepare Potting Mix Meanwhile, you can either prepare your own potting mix or buy it ready-made from a nursery. For this project, I used Baba brand ‘Seedling Package’. It came with 0.88 lb. (400 gram) peat moss and ten numbers of cultivation pots that are 2 inches (5 cm) deep. If you don’t use this cultivation pot often, you can save money by reusing or recycling 0.12 gallon (500 ml) empty mineral bottles. Cut off two thirds of the bottle and use the bottom one third. Make holes at the base and, after cleaning, your cultivation pot is ready for use. 3. Transplant the Swollen Seeds Moisten the peat moss (or potting mix) and make a small hole in the mix. Gently push the plumeria seed about 0.2 inches (5mm) into the mix. Make sure the swollen end is at the bottom and the seed wing is at the top. Allow part of this wing to stick out of the soil. Tenderly press the soil against the side of the plumeria seed. 4. Create a Mini Greenhouse Effect Place these pots in an empty plastic container and cover it to create a mini greenhouse effect. Place it in a warm, lighted area, but not under full sunlight. Check daily to make sure the soil is not dry. If the top soil looks dry, mist it with water. 5. Wait for the Seeds to Germinate Depending on the freshness of the seeds, it will take from seven days to over a month for them to germinate. Most of the time, the leaf will emerge with the remains of the husk still attached. It will drop off as the leaves grow bigger. If any of the seedlings show signs of mold during the germination process, treat it immediately with a mild fungicide. 6. Remove the Husk If It Sticks to the Cotyledons The husk will usually fall off by itself, but occasionally this may not happen soon enough. If these husks are not removed from the cotyledons (i.e. the embryonic first leaves of the seedling), the seedlings might rot and die. You may have to assist by spraying it with a fine mist and gently removing these husks. 7. Transplant the Seedlings Once you see a new set of leaves and the seedling is more than three inches tall, you can start to transplant it to a bigger pot. Gently remove the seedling from the cultivation pot and, together with the peat moss (or your potting soil), transplant it to the new and bigger pot. In my case, the plumeria plant will finally be planted in the ground. So, I reused an empty 2.5 gallon (9.5 liter) empty mineral bottle as the pot for transplanting. It is also lighter and easier to move around. Potting Soil I prepare my own potting soil using one part peat moss, two parts finely crushed clay bricks, and three parts garden topsoil. You can do similar ‘recipe’ or buy ready-made potting soil. Once you have it transplanted, water it every alternate day, but make sure the soil is not waterlogged. You can now introduce fertilizer that is high in phosphorus content to help your young plumeria grow strong and healthy. I use the organic fertilizer that is a mixture of cedars, cypress, pines, and plantains. I use it once a week. 8. Move the Plants to Full Direct Sunlight Plumeria or Frangipani loves direct sunlight, but this must be done gradually. A week is about just right for this ‘moving transition period’ from shaded to direct and stronger sunlight. You start by putting them in a shady and protected area. Leave them for a few hours. Increase the time for the next few days until it is a full day exposure but still under the shade. During this period, keep nudging the plants to be closer to the full sunlight. After a week of doing this, the plants will be ready to be exposed to full sunlight on a daily basis. That’s it, folks. Just sit back and enjoy your hard work. Place only one seed in a hole, then cover with loose peat that has been slightly moistened. Press the peat to make it slightly firm. • Grab some plastic wrap from the kitchen and completely wrap however many pots you have made, then place them all in the freezer for about six weeks. • Once you remove the pots from your freezer, I would recommend that you place them on a propagation mat at about 60-65 degrees close to a window that allows a lot of sunshine in. • When the soil feels just barely moist at the very top, you can water the plant. Don’t ever let it dry completely out, but don’t keep it soggy (seeds can mildew if they get soggy). • Once more, be patient, as it could take from two to six months for your bleeding heart plant to sprout. Once you do see some growth, thin out the weakest ones and leave only one plant in each pot. • Don’t move the plants outside until after the last frost. • Once your plants have some mature leaves, they are ready to be transplanted into larger pots filled with potting soil, and grown in light shade for their first year. • Continue to water whenever the soil feels barely moist at the top, then transplant them into a larger container, or a shady garden bed in early autumn (too much heat or sunshine will cause your flowers to be short lived (ephemeral), and although they don’t die, they do become dormant, but the roots are still fine. This is welcoming news for the impatient gardeners amongst us – or is it? While bamboo provides the instant gratification of being a fast grower, some varieties of bamboo can become very invasive and grow out of control. How to Grow Bamboo From Seed STEP 1 Firstly you need to prepare your growing medium. I always find that a good quality general purpose compost is most successful when germinating bamboo seed. STEP 2 Fill your chosen pot or tray with compost and moisten it with water. Place the pot or tray into your propagator for 24hrs bringing it up to the required germination temperature (20 – 26 deg C). If you don’t have a propagator simply cover the top of your pot with a clear plastic bag held in place with an elastic band. STEP 3 Soak your seeds in tepid water for 24 hours. Make sure it doesn’t get too hot, as high temperatures can kill your seeds. Cooler temperatures however, will not hurt the seeds, but may delay germination by a few days. Space your seeds out on top of your warm compost at 1cm intervals and sprinkle a further fine layer of compost on top (approx 0.5cm is enough). STEP 4 Place your propagator in a location where it will get medium shade. NOTE: Wherever you put it, it should not get too much direct sun, even a mini greenhouse can quickly get up to seed killing temperatures in hot direct sun. Check on the propagator daily making sure that the compost never dries out. Before the seeds sprout, they can survive getting too dry once or so but as soon as they sprout, they can die in a matter of hours if they dry out. You may see a sprout within 10 days from planting, though the bulk of germination will occur after at least 15 or 20 days. STEP 5 Different species have different germination rates, so don’t get disappointed too soon. If any of the sprouted seedlings get tall enough to touch the plastic dome lid while others are still getting started, prop the lid up as necessary to prevent the leaves from touching it; Any leaves resting against the lid will quickly rot and risk killing the seedling. STEP 6 After about 30 days, most of the seeds that are going to sprout with this method will have done so. Transplant all of the healthy sprouts into 4cm pots using the next few steps. (Don’t discard the rest of the seeds yet, as a few more may bolt into action by changing their conditions). Mix a good potting soil with about 50% small bark-chip mulch. This makes a potting mix with very high drainage that is good for bamboo. Move each seedling into a pot and fill around it so that the neck of the seedling is level with the top of the potting soil. Give the pots a good dose of water. Because of the really good drainage, don’t worry too much about over watering. Set these pots in an outdoor location that gets about 50% shade and that never gets full hot direct sun for more than a few minutes at a time. These seedlings are now well on their way. You will likely lose approximately 10% of them for no apparent reason at all, but the rest will have a good chance at making it to maturity. Tips For the first winter in cooler climates, the seedlings will need shelter. Plant the pots in the ground and give an inch or two of mulch. Don’t give them more mulch than that, as it will encourage mice to move in and later to eat the top off of your bamboo. In really cold climates or for less hardy species, they may need to spend their first winter indoors or in a greenhouse. But remember that they need some water even in winter, so don’t just put them in a greenhouse and forget about them! During the following Spring consider ‘potting them on’ if you feel that the roots need some more room. Then simply keep moist, sit back and wait for your first bunch of new culms / canes. Once the seedlings have reached a height of approx 30cm their ready to be transplanted into your garden. The barrier itself should protrude 2 inches (5 cm.) above the ground to discourage any wayward rhizomes. Bamboo can grow under varying light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. New bamboo plantings should be watered regularly until they are established. The addition of mulch around the base of bamboo plants should also be considered to retain moisture. Bamboo prefers soil that is characteristically moist and loamy with a soil pH ranging from highly acidic to slightly alkaline. Fertilizing is not mandatory for growing bamboo, but you can opt to do so in mid-late spring with a fertilizer high in nitrogen.
